$223M Sui Hack Sparks Centralization Concerns

Sui Hack Raises Centralization Fears

Sui DEX Hack and Initial Response: On May 22, 2025, Cetus, a decentralized exchange on the Sui blockchain, faced a $223 million exploit due to a smart contract flaw, allowing the attacker to use spoofed tokens. The hacker's wallet held $52 million in Sui (SUI), $4.9 million in Haedal Staked SUI (HASUI), $19.5 million in Toilet (TOILET), and $19.5 million in wrapped USDt (USDT). Validators, in coordination with the Sui Foundation, froze $160 million by rejecting the attacker's transactions.

Centralized Control Concerns Emerge: Validators updated a configuration file to filter transactions at the mempool stage, leveraging the Move object model, as noted by Wu Blockchain on May 23, 2025. A withdrawn GitHub pull request from Mysten Labs proposed an "allow list" to bypass signature checks for recovery, sparking backlash. Critics, including Blockworks Advisory’s David Rodriguez, warned, “Censoring due to a third-party app exploit is a slippery slope,” highlighting risks of centralized control.

Debate Over Sui’s Decentralization: The Sui Foundation stated, “Sui is a decentralized network,” denying control over validators. However, the lack of onchain governance and validators’ 30 million SUI bond ($114 million stake) raised concerns about informal consensus. Critics argued this sets a dangerous precedent for future interventions, potentially undermining Sui’s decentralized credibility, as the episode fueled debates on validator power and censorship risks. ⛺️ Camp: Autonomous IP Layer 1 Blockchain.

⛺️ What is Camp: Camp is a Layer-1 blockchain for IP and AI. Its Proof of Provenance Protocol lets creators tokenize IP—music, code, or data—with verifiable ownership and royalties. Users can deploy AI agents to create and monetize IP in a trustless system. With gasless registration and $30M from 1kx, Blockchain Capital, and others, Camp empowers creators to own their work.

⁉️ Why Does Camp Exist: AI models often scrape content without crediting creators, eroding ownership. Camp fixes this with on-chain IP protection. Its Origin Framework registers IP with programmable licensing, and mAItrix powers AI agents trained on user-owned IP. With 250+ teams building on Camp, it ensures creators control and monetize their work in an AI-driven world.

⚡ Camp Testnet & TrailHeads: Camp’s testnet invites you to explore its ecosystem through Ecosystem Quests.
