BANKEX Sues ZKsync for IP Theft

Matter Labs Sued for IP Theft
Lawsuit Filed Against Matter Labs: On March 19, 2025, BANKEX filed a lawsuit in New York Supreme Court against Matter Labs, the developer of ZKsync, alleging intellectual property theft. The suit claims former BANKEX employees stole proprietary technology to build ZKsync, a layer-2 scaling solution. Matter Labs, which raised $450 million in funding, denied the allegations, with a spokesperson stating, "The claims are baseless and without merit." The case could impact ZKsync’s growth in the blockchain space.
Accused Employees and Technology: The lawsuit names former BANKEX employees Alexandr Vlasov and Petr Korolev, who allegedly used BANKEX’s Plasma technology, developed in 2017, to create Matter Labs’ ZKsync. BANKEX claims the two secretly transferred code while still employed, violating agreements. This technology underpins ZKsync’s zero-knowledge rollup, launched to enhance Ethereum’s scalability. The suit alleges deliberate misappropriation, potentially affecting Matter Labs’ reputation.
Defendants and Next Steps: The lawsuit also targets Matter Labs CEO Alex Gluchowski, along with investors Dragonfly and Chris Burniske. Dragonfly, Burniske, and Korolev did not respond to multiple requests for comment. BANKEX lawyer Clayton Mahaffey told CoinDesk, “We prefer not to comment further on the case at this time, other than to reiterate our belief that the allegations in the complaint are well founded and that we look forward to our day in court.” Read More.
