Former NYC Mayor Rugpulls Memecoin

🪙 Alleged Rugpull on NYC Token

Suspicious Liquidity Moves: Former New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the NYC Token memecoin on January 12th, 2026, during a Times Square press conference. Several hours later, on-chain activity showed significant liquidity changes. Bubblemaps reported that the team extracted over $1 million by cycling USDC in and out of liquidity pools. A wallet labeled 9Ty4M, connected to the deployer, removed roughly $2.5 million in USDC near the price peak and added back about $1.5 million after the token price dropped more than 60%. Rune Crypto stated on X that at least $3.4 million had been drained overall.

Pattern and Comparisons: Bubblemaps described the liquidity pattern as reminiscent of the LIBRA token launch, involving heavy manipulation. The token, deployed on Solana with a total supply of 1 billion and 70% allocated to an NYC Token Reserve excluded from initial circulating supply, surged to a $600 million market cap before falling below $100 million. StarPlatinum noted high centralization and elevated risk. No explanation has been provided for the liquidity movements.

Announcement and Token Purpose: Adams promoted the token to generate revenues for an unnamed nonprofit addressing anti-Americanism, antisemitism, and related concerns. He stated verbatim, “As Walmart is using blockchains to deal with their food chain and transparency, we know cities can run better, and by using this New York City token, this New York City token, we’re going to continue to invest in making our city a safer city.” Adams did not disclose co-founders during the event.
